There was a lull in the battle
some time in the late morning when British Captain
Ferguson spotted an American Officer riding
with a European Cavalry officer. The British
watched them disappear into the woods, only
to have the officer reappear, this time alone,
about 100 yards away. Mounted on a "very
good bay and wearing a high cocked hat"
Ferguson called to the officer to halt, but
the American proceeded regardless. Leveling
his gun at him Ferguson again yelled to stop
but the officer slowly continued on his way.
Ferguson could easily have shot the officer,
but did not feel it "pleasant" to
fire into the back one who was so unoffending.
He let him alone. A few minutes later a shot
rang out and Ferguson was hit, shattering his
elbow. As the surgeons later dressed his wound,
they informed him that same officer had ridden
in their view also and that it had been General
Washington.
