In August of 1781, General Washington
and the Comte de Rochambeau left
NewYork for Virginia when word was received that Admiral
de Grace was
heading north with a French fleet to attack the British
at Yorktown. The two
Generals led the French and American troops towards
Yorktown, 550 miles on
roads that could barely be called roads. When they reached
Virginia,
Washington took advantage of being close to his beloved
Mount Vernon and for
the first time in over five years rode to his home.
Seen here is General Washington , the Comte de Rochambeau,
secretary
Jonathan Trumble Jr. and other staff in the unfinished
dining room at Mount
Vernon planning the seige of Yorktown.
